Buyers compare advertising blimps on price and size. Almost nobody asks what the thing is made of, which is unfortunate, because material is the difference between a blimp that flies for years and one that fails in a season. This page is about construction.

Polyurethane, not PVC

The cheap end of this market is PVC. It is easy to source, easy to weld, and cheap to ship. It is also the reason so many people conclude that advertising balloons “do not last.”

PVC has two problems outdoors. Ultraviolet light breaks it down, so it goes brittle and chalky under sustained sun. And it holds a fold — leave it packed for a month and the crease line becomes a permanent weak point.

Polyurethane behaves differently on both counts. It handles UV far better, and it recovers from being folded rather than remembering it. That is why a blimp built from polyurethane can be deflated between uses, stored flat in its carton, and inflated again months later without a stress line where the fold was.

The practical evidence is dull and convincing: customers still flying the same balloon after fourteen years. That does not happen with PVC.

Panel construction and why it matters for artwork

A blimp is not one piece of material. It is a set of shaped panels seamed together into a hull, with fins at the tail.

The panels are white. That is deliberate — white is the substrate that lets full-colour printing reproduce almost any graphic or colour you supply. A coloured base material would shift every colour printed on it.

Building from panels also means the artwork can wrap the shape properly. A logo printed flat onto a curved object distorts. Printing onto panels that are then formed into the hull keeps proportions readable from the ground, which is the only place anyone will see it.

Artwork goes on both sides. On a 13-foot blimp at $1,526, that printing is included in the price rather than quoted as an extra. It is worth checking that when comparing suppliers, because “blimp price” and “blimp price with your logo on it” are frequently two different numbers elsewhere.

What the three-to-seven-day build is

Production runs three to seven days from artwork approval. That clock starts at approval, not at order, which is the detail that catches people planning around an event.

The sequence is roughly: artwork is prepared and proofed to the panel layout, panels are printed, panels are cut and seamed into the hull, fins are attached, and the unit is checked and packed.

Because printing is to order, there is no stock of pre-printed blimps to pull from. A 5.5-foot plain sphere, by contrast, can ship in one to two days if it is in stock, since there is no print step waiting on approval.

Packing and shipping

The finished blimp folds flat into a single carton, 60 by 26 by 3 inches. One box, not a crate.

It ships UPS Ground from the factory in North Carolina, two to five business days to anywhere in the continental United States, at $135. A sphere ships in the same format for $27.

That carton is also the storage container. The blimp goes back into it at the end of a run and stays there until next time. No special storage conditions, no hanging, no inflation between uses.

What is in the box

Along with the blimp itself, you choose one of two lines: a 120-foot tether line, or a 105-foot metallic pennant line. One or the other — they are alternatives, not a pair.

A helium fill hose is $45 as an add-on if you do not already have one from a previous purchase.

What construction does not solve

Material quality answers wear. It does not answer weather.

The 25 mile per hour wind rule exists regardless of what a blimp is made of. Above that, bring it in. The failure mode in this business is almost never a blimp wearing out — it is a blimp getting away in wind. Polyurethane buys you years of service life; it does not buy you a tether that holds in a storm.

Similarly, helium loss of about one percent per day is physics, not workmanship. Helium is a small molecule and it migrates through any flexible material eventually. Every blimp everywhere needs topping off every three to seven days.

Repairs and wear

Wear is covered — if a blimp wears out in service, it goes back for a replacement.

Weather loss is not covered, and no manufacturer covers it. A blimp that broke free in wind is a lost blimp, which is why the forecast habit matters more than any construction detail on this page.

Why any of this is worth knowing

Because it explains the price gap. A polyurethane blimp with printed panels and included artwork at $1,526 is not competing with a $200 PVC balloon on the same terms. One is built to be inflated, deflated, stored and reflown for years. The other is built to look right in a photograph.

If a supplier will not tell you the material, that is the answer.
